Privacy Policy
Effective October 1, 2026
The short version
- Code Quest saves only what it needs to run the lessons: your name, email address, and coding progress.
- Your progress can be seen by you, by teachers of classes you choose to join, and by the site administrator.
- If a teacher imports a class from Google Classroom, Code Quest only reads the class names and student lists. It never changes anything in Google Classroom.
- Code Quest has no ads, does not sell or rent data, and does not use data for advertising.
- You can ask for your data to be deleted at any time by emailing mrubenstein6192@gmail.com.
1. Who we are
Code Quest (codequestpython.com) is a free educational website for learning the Python programming language. It is run by Michael Rubenstein, a teacher. In this policy, "Code Quest," "we," and "us" mean the website and the person who runs it. Contact: mrubenstein6192@gmail.com.
2. Information we collect
Account information
- Email address and first name. These come from what you type when you sign up, or from your Google account's basic profile (name and email) if you use Sign in with Google.
- Password. If you sign up with email and password, your password is handled by Google Firebase Authentication. We never see or store your password.
- A unique account ID created by Firebase.
Learning progress
- Which levels you finished, whether you used the Typing Guide, points (XP), rank, and daily streak.
- How many levels you finished each day, and when you were last active.
- Typing speed and accuracy on levels done with the Typing Guide.
- How many times you ran each level, and the last code you ran on each level, so your teacher can help when you're stuck.
- Your settings (sound, big text, calm mode) and the classes you joined.
Teacher information
- Teacher name and email address, the classes a teacher creates (class name, section, class code), and class rosters (student names and email addresses) that the teacher types in or imports from Google Classroom.
- Teacher invite links: who made the invite, and who used it.
What we do not collect
- We don't use advertising, analytics, or tracking cookies, and we don't track you across other websites.
- We don't collect location, photos, contacts, or any information from your device beyond what's listed here.
- Your Python programs run inside your own web browser. Only the last code you ran on each level is saved, as described above.
3. Google user data
Code Quest uses Google APIs in two ways.
Sign in with Google
When you choose Sign in with Google, we receive your Google account's name, email address, and account ID. We use them only to create and sign in to your Code Quest account, to show your name in the app, and, for students, to match you to a class roster your teacher made.
Google Classroom (teachers only)
Teachers can choose to import their classes from Google Classroom. Code Quest asks Google for these read-only permissions only when the teacher clicks Import from Google Classroom or Sync roster:
| Permission | What Code Quest reads | Why |
|---|---|---|
classroom.courses.readonly | The names, sections, and IDs of the teacher's active classes | So the teacher can choose which classes to import |
classroom.rosters.readonly | The list of students in the classes the teacher chooses (names and Classroom user IDs) | To build the class list on the Teacher Dashboard |
classroom.profile.emails | Those students' email addresses | To match each student on the roster to their Code Quest account |
Code Quest never creates, changes, or deletes anything in Google Classroom, and it never reads assignments, grades, coursework, or messages. The Google access token is kept only in the teacher's browser while the dashboard is open, and is not saved on our servers. The imported class names and rosters are saved in Code Quest so the teacher can see them later. Only that teacher (and the site administrator) can see them.
Students listed on an imported roster are not added to a class automatically. The next time they sign in, Code Quest asks whether they want to join. A teacher can see a student's progress only after the student joins.
Limited Use
Code Quest's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically, we use Google user data only to provide the features described above. We do not sell it, do not use it for advertising, do not use it to train AI or machine-learning models, and do not let people read it except the teacher who imported it, the site administrator when needed for security or support, or when required by law.
4. How we use information
- To run your account and save your progress so you can continue on any device.
- To show progress to the teachers of classes you joined, so they can support your learning.
- To show rewards like points, streaks, ranks, and the Daily Warm-up.
- To keep the site secure and fix problems.
We don't use student information for advertising or marketing, and we don't build profiles about students for any purpose other than the learning activity on Code Quest.
5. Who can see your information
| Who | What they can see |
|---|---|
| You (student) | Your own account and progress |
| Your teacher(s) | Your name, email, and progress, only for classes you joined. You can leave a class anytime in ⚙️ Settings. |
| Site administrator | All accounts and progress, to run and support the site |
| Service providers | Code Quest is hosted on Google Firebase (Google Cloud), which stores data on our behalf. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. |
We don't sell, rent, or trade personal information. We may share information only if required by law or to protect the safety of students and users.
6. Students and schools
Code Quest is designed for use in K–12 classrooms under the direction of a teacher or school. We collect only the information needed for the learning activity. Where a school uses Code Quest with students under 13, the school is responsible for any consent needed for educational use. Parents and guardians can ask to review or delete their child's information by emailing us, and we will respond within 30 days.
7. Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and stored in Google Firebase. Database security rules make sure each student can read and change only their own record, and teachers can read only students in their own classes.
8. Keeping and deleting data
- We keep account and progress data while the account is in use.
- Teachers can delete their classes and rosters from the Teacher Dashboard at any time.
- To delete an account and all of its progress, email mrubenstein6192@gmail.com from the account's email address (or as the student's parent, guardian, or teacher). We'll delete it within 30 days.
- Teachers can revoke Code Quest's access to Google Classroom at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how Google user data is used, we'll update this page before the change takes effect.
